Destinations
Cape Town follows a Mediterranean climate – hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. It’s the opposite of much of the rest of South Africa.

What to expect in summer (Nov–March): Long days, blue skies, beach weather, outdoor dining, vineyard visits, and festivals. It’s Cape Town at its finest.
What to expect in winter (June–Aug): Cooler temperatures, rain showers, and wind – but also: dramatic skies, golden vineyards, fewer tourists, and excellent restaurant reservations. Not ideal for beach days, but a cosy, scenic off-season.
Winelands Tip:
Franschhoek and Stellenbosch are especially beautiful in Autumn (March–May) – cooler weather, fewer crowds, and harvest season magic.
This region follows a subtropical savanna climate – hot, wet summers and cool, dry winters. That means winter (May–September) is also a great time for safaris.

Dry season (May–Sept): This is considered by locals prime safari time. Water sources dry up, animals congregate near rivers and waterholes, grasses are shorter, and the air is crisp and clear.
Expect cool mornings and evenings, but warm days – perfect for game drives.
Green season (Nov–March): The bush is lush and green, with dramatic thunderstorms. It’s calving season for many animals, and birding is superb – but wildlife can be harder to spot and some areas are hot and humid.
KwaZulu-Natal enjoys a subtropical coastal climate – warm to hot year-round with summer rainfall. It’s one of the few regions in South Africa where August can feel like early summer.

Winter (June–Aug): Clear skies, warm days (around 25°C), and gentle sea breezes make this a favourite for mid-year travellers. It’s quieter than the December peak and ideal for families or anyone looking for some sunshine during a northern hemisphere winter.
Summer (Nov–Feb): Hot, humid, with afternoon thunderstorms. Great for beach lovers, but prepare for some tropical volatility.
This stretch of coastal forest, beaches, mountains, and malaria-free game reserves offers a temperate oceanic climate – meaning mild, variable weather year-round. Rain can fall in any season, but it’s rarely extreme.

Spring to Autumn (Sept–April): Ideal for road trips, whale watching, wine tasting, and family-friendly adventure. Milder than Cape Town in summer, and far greener.

When to Go Based on What You Want to Do
Not all trips are built the same – here’s when to go based on experiences, not just weather:
- May to September = peak wildlife viewing (dry season)
- Animals gather near water, grasses are short, and visibility is excellent
- Especially strong in Kruger, Madikwe, Timbavati and the Waterberg
